Which attributes are more important for the leadership of Australia? A tantrum by a female P.M. using the gender card and taking words out of context to make a claim of sexism?? OR A person who has held various Ministerial posts, voted against Work Choices at a Cabinet meeting, is a member of SLSC and Rural Fire Service, spent weeks teaching in remote aboriginal settlements in Cape York, and just an ordinary bloke without a glib tongue? Shouldn't we judge a person by their actions instead of a tongue lashing by their adversary/adver sariesl? O.M.G.

Hello Jenny, The real problem is that Abbott makes many more sick and I guess you find that unpalatable (pun intended). The PM hopeless, desperate? Hardly! Isn't it interesting that "that speech" has turned around the rhetoric against her? You know the bile spouted by Alan Jones and his ilk?

Jeff , Julia's "speech" was to divert attention from the hopelessness of her Govt ...and it WAS purely the rantings of a desperate woman ...she makes me physically SICK .!

It was about time that the PM called Tony Abbott out. Good for her, she found sympathy from many (and not just women) when she called him a misogynist. His brand of politics is a real turn-off and hopefully the Liberal Party will come to its senses and replace him.

I found Julia Gillard’s rant at Tony Abbott in Question Time embarrassing. Not befitting of a Prime Minister, and to think she then went on and voted to keep Peter Slipper in parliament, a man who texted the most deplorable things about women. WHY didn’t she call him a MISOGYNIST? As I see it, she didn’t want to have to comment on Peter Slipper in Question Time, so she gave Tony Abbott a serve instead. News reports overseas (and some domestically) were very selective in their reporting. I think if it had been coupled with the Peter Slipper saga many would have had a different reaction. Julia Gillard's hatred of Tony Abbott is incredible. I sometimes wonder if she is jealous of what he has achieved in his life for example: he is a Rhodes Scholar. Respect has to be earned. Julia Gillard has not earned my respect. I think she was more involved in the knifing of Kevin Rudd long before that night in June 2010.

The "debate" confuses two issues, 1. whether the Speaker should have been summarily sacked via an opportunistic motion from Abbott, and 2. the appropriateness of Abbott to lead this charge. For the first, events were still unfolding from crude text messages released during the Ashby case, and the resignation was a much better way of addressing the issue. 2. Abbott in the past has associated himself with sexist attitudes towards women and was a highly dubious advocate for leading a crusade against misogyny (now accepted as an alternative definition of serial sexism against women). Gillard's speech addressed Abbott's hypocrisy.
