On the 30th March we posted a questionnaire on education. Responses indicated a high degree of dissatisfaction with the current direction of primary and secondary education. This questionnaire aims to test how you view some of the policies that have been proposed to make education better:

1. Thinking about Primary and Secondary education how would you rate the following policy proposals?

a. Principals should be able to hire and fire staff
b. Schools should be run directly by boards of teachers and parents
c. Parents should be given a voucher equal to the full cost of educating a child at a government school ($10,000 approx according to the Australian Productivity Commission) which would go to the school they choose for their child irrespective of whether it is state or private.
d. Parents should be given a means-tested voucher on a sliding scale equal to all, or some, depending on their income, of the full cost of educating a child at a government school which would go to the school they choose for their child irrespective of whether it is state or private.
e. Community groups ought to receive financial assistance from the state to establish and run non-fee-paying schools (Charter Schools)
f. The State Government should spend more money on resources for schools
g. There should be greater focus on basic formal education in English and maths.
h. Good teachers should be paid more.
i. Class sizes should be reduced.
j. Information about comparative school performance should be freely available.
k. Students should be given their rank order in class.
